Greetings from the 2012 Ontario Camps Association conference! From January 25-27, Bunny, Black Bear and Jay have been staying in Toronto and soaking in a variety of keynote speeches and sessions. We’ve been having lots of fun, enjoying yummy food (but not as good as camp food, of course), meeting staff from other camps, learning about staff training, youth development, games and programming ideas, and lots more!

We’re bringing home more than just cool ideas! Bunny won a really cool prize at the exhibitor hall where we met a variety of vendors selling camp-related products and services. What did she win? We’re going to keep it a secret for now, but you’ll probably see it at camp this summer! We’ve also got some great ideas for tuck shop items, and we’ll show them off soon!

What a great way to start off 2012 as we prepare for our summer camp season which is just a few months away. We look forward to seeing you all soon!

Snowflake Soiree Dinner and Dance

You’ll enjoy a delicious catered dinner followed by music and dancing, and you’ll also have the opportunity to bid on exciting products and services in the silent auction. White Owl Lodge Building Dedication

We recently sent out a letter to a number of churches and donors thanking you for your contributions to camp in memory of Joe Molloy. We plan to honour Mr. Molloy and his contributions to the camp ministry with a formal dedication ceremony for our existing “White Owl Lodge” building at camp. Unfortunately the letter was sent out before we were able to insert the date of the ceremony. We will be holding this dedication ceremony in the spring of 2012 (exact date yet to be finalized). We will send invitations out once we finalize the date. We sincerely apologize for any confusion this may have caused.

Camp has started!

We’ve had an exciting spring full of training and preparation and it is now starting to pay off! The Wilkie Memorial Pavilion was completed and dedicated this weekend during staff in-camp training. Week 1 of camp has just started and for the next four weeks the campsite will be filled with excited children and staff members!

It’s not too late to apply — we still have a few spots open for campers and volunteer staff in weeks 3 and 4. Apply today if you want to join us at camp this summer!

Prepare your child for camp

At Camp Cherith we think “homesickness” is an unfortunate term. The word “sickness” implies that something is wrong, and out of the ordinary. We think it’s quite the opposite! “Missing home” might be a better term. Everyone misses home — even our staff! It’s completely normal, though of course different people react in different ways and in varying degrees.

If this is your child’s first time at a sleepover camp, we suggest following the tips mentioned in the article. Go over the expectations of what camp will be like. (Check out our photos and videos to get a better idea.) Don’t make any promises you can’t keep (like promising to call every day, or packing a cell phone). And be sure to mention it to the cabin leader when you arrive.

There’s also another option if you want to become involved in camp yourself — why not apply to volunteer as a staff member up at camp?

Staff Pre-Camp Training

A reminder to staff that pre-camp training will be held this weekend at Grace Presbyterian Church, 1220 Old Tenth Line Road in Orleans. A session for NEW staff only will be held on Friday, June 3 from 6:45pm to 9:30pm, and a session for ALL staff will be held on Saturday from 9:00am to 4:00pm. Expect a great day of fellowship and excitement for camp which is only a month away!

Pavilion construction is under way!

With less than two months before summer camp starts, we’ve got a busy spring planned! Construction on the Wilkie Memorial Pavilion started last fall with the ground preparation and gravel, and we built foundations, forms, and posts in early May.

We’ve begun our spring construction work week! Over 28 people joined us for the first weekend, May 13-15, and a smaller crew are on site this week. We expect another great turnout this coming long weekend, May 20-23. Want to come? Click here for details on joining us!

In addition to the pavilion construction, we have a lot of other exciting projects on the go:

Widening of our visitor parking area so we don’t feel so crowded on registration day.
A new campfire pit down by the waterfront with ampitheatre style seating — we call it campitheatre.
A new tuck shop!
A new business manager’s office and dedicated storage area so there’s more room in the kitchen!
A new Health Care Center trailer!
And lots more small (and big!) changes…

Wilkie Memorial Pavilion Initial Construction
